The company noticed increased mortality at its Cort Acre Egg Farm on Saturday, January 25th, and promptly sent samples for testing. The results confirmed the presence of HPAI .
Rose Acre Farms immediately implemented enhanced biosecurity measures to their existing stringent protocol in an effort to contain the spread of the virus. They are collaborating with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health to determine the most effective strategies to combat the outbreak. \The USDA is actively monitoring animal infections, while the CDC is focused on tracking human infections. Rose Acre Farms emphasizes that while the risk to other bird populations, including migratory waterfowl, backyard poultry, and commercial flocks, is significant, the risk to humans remains low. Bird flu primarily spreads through direct bird-to-bird contact or via contaminated surfaces and materials such as manure, egg crates, farming equipment, and even clothing, shoes, or hands. \The USDA states that there is no cure for bird flu, and the only way to prevent its spread is to cull all infected or potentially infected birds. Symptoms of bird flu in poultry include sudden death without prior illness, lethargy, loss of appetite, reduced egg production or deformed eggs, swelling of the eyelids, comb, wattles, and shanks, purple discoloration of the wattles, comb, and legs, difficulty breathing, nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing, head and neck twisting, stumbling or falling, and diarrhea. According to USDA data, in the last 30 days, Indiana has reported four commercial flocks affected, totaling 418,500 birds. As of January 6, 2025, the CDC reports 66 confirmed human cases of bird flu in the United States since 2024 and 67 confirmed cases since 2022
