on Saturday, June 14, 2025. Congress is moving forward to beef up security for its members after a gunman killed a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband. The call for enhanced security protocols are coming from both Democrats and Republicans in what some are calling a politically motivated shooting. Former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed, and Minnesota state Senator John Hoffman and his wife sustained serious injuries. Currently security detail is only reserved for top congressional leaders, but with the political climate getting more intense it could be time for a change. The Senate is holding a classified briefing for all members on Tuesday to discuss security concerns and the risk of similar political violence.
