Under the legislation, September 11th would be recognized as 'Patriot Day.'
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., on Wednesday announced the introduction of a measure to recognize the anniversary of 9/11 as “Patriot Day.” The measure, known as the “Patriot Day Act,” would formally recognize September 11th as a federal holiday.
It would do this by amending Title 5 of the United States Code to enshrine the date alongside other celebrations such as Independence Day and Memorial Day. “The Patriot Day Act is a reaffirmation of our national character, ensuring that the heroism, sacrifice, and unity of that day are never lost to time,” Rep. Fitzpatrick said in a statement. "Just as Memorial Day honors those who gave their lives in service and Independence Day marks the birth of our nation, September 11th deserves the same national recognition.” By making it a federal holiday, we ensure that future generations will always come together to honor the lives lost, reflect on the courage displayed, and renew our vow to never forget,” he added. Former President Joe Biden created the most recent federal holiday, Juneteenth, in 2021. It became the first new holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. Then-Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy in August referred to Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S., as “useless.” He had also called for Election Day to become a federal holiday.Jackson Walker on X at @_jlwalker_ for the latest trending national news.
