A new study reveals the discovery of a binary star system, D9, orbiting the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at the center of our galaxy.
Researchers have spotted a binary star system, named D9, orbiting near the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) at the center of our galaxy. This is the first time a binary star has been observed so close to a supermassive black hole. While binary stars are common elsewhere in the universe, they were not thought to be able to survive near such powerful gravitational forces . D9 is estimated to be 2.7 million years old and will likely merge into a single star within one million years.
This discovery challenges previous assumptions that stars could not form near supermassive black holes
