Two education-related bills that could significantly change classroom instruction and displays in Alabama public schools were discussed during a committee meeting this week. Senate Bill 209 would overhaul how sex education is taught in Alabama’s public K-12 schools.

The bill would require schools to teach sexual risk avoidance and emphasize abstinence from all sexual activity as the expected standard. It would also prohibit sex education instruction for students in kindergarten through fourth grade and ban lessons that demonstrate contraceptives or provide information on how to obtain abortion or contraception. The bill’s sponsor, Senator Shay Shelnutt, told lawmakers the goal is to limit what students are exposed to and address what he described as misinformation. “SB 209 is about sexual risk avoidance it's about sex education and what we're teaching our kids in school and what we don't want to teach. There's a lot of misinformation out there.” Shelnutt noted the bill passed out of committee last year and said supporters believe certain topics are not appropriate for younger students, “I think we would all agree that fourth fifth and sixth graders shouldn't be talking about certain elements.” Lawmakers also heard testimony on Senate Bill 99, which would require public schools serving fifth through twelfth grades to display a poster titled "Historical Truths: The Ten Commandments and America’s Founding Documents". The displays would be required in every U.S. history classroom for grades five through twelve, as well as one additional common area such as a school library, provided the materials are donated. The bill's sponsor, Senator Keith Kelley explained the bill is intended to provide historical context rather than promote religion, and the displays focus on the role the Ten Commandments played in shaping American law and culture. “Local schools must display a poster titled historical truths the ten commandments and America's founding documents. It's not a religious document it's a historical founding documents that kind of builds on how our culture how our law and how our nation was formed from a historical standpoint.” Kelley also pushed back against concerns that the proposal promotes religion in public schools and said, “It doesn't give its not advocating for you to be a certain religion its not preaching religion its just telling that the ten commandments are the basis of the foundation of our countries history.”Both bills will be heading to the senate floor for review and a vote to send to the second chamber, the House of RepresentativesBALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. -- A homicide investigation is underway in baldwin countyThe sheriff's office was called to sandy creek drive around 3-30 a-m for a shootinPanic.Maybe you've felt it for a moment when you thought you lost your child at a Mardi Gras parade... or you couldn't find your ID and you're already late forMobile Police are currently responding to a shooting in the 900 block of Wesley Avenue.A woman has died from multiple gunshots and a man has been detained in tThe search for a missing Theodore family is intensifying as the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office again urged the public to come forward with any information thatThe Fairhope Police Department reports that they've taken three reports in three days involving a scam that resulted in victims handing over large amounts of ca
