We speak to Billie Boullet & Ashley Brooke bout their respective roles as Anne and Margot Frank in NatGeo’s powerful series ASmallLight, which premieres May 1:
The upcoming National Geographic series A Small Light tells the powerful story of the Frank family and the people who hid them. While A Small Light centers on the lesser-known Miep Gies and her husband Jan , the couple who hid the Franks, the show helps viewers get to know the Frank family as well. A Small Light is full of performances that match the power of the real-life story, and has a stunning cast which includes Liev Schreiber, Noah Taylor, and more.
Billie Boullet: I wanted to get Anne right. There's been so many portrayals of her [where] it's their versions of Anne. I really wanted it to be truthful to her diary, and her fieriness, and her strong will, and her opinions. She was a real teenage girl; she had bite to her. She had a character to her. She had depth. I really wanted to bring forward the 3D version of her instead of the 2D version, which I thought she was before researching her.
Ashley: I didn't know Anne had a sister before this project, and I've also had Anne's diary in my room since such a young age, so I was really surprised by that. Once I started diving deep into the research, I tried to take into account that everything that I was reading was people's perspectives of Margot, and Margot actually had her own diary. Every time I tried to go back to what Margot's perspective [would] really be on the circumstances.
Ashley Brooke: I think what was really special was getting to see my grandma's story. She'd always told me, from a young age, that she would tell me her story, but she developed Alzheimer's. I was able to see a video of hers right when I got this project. She described the fear of everything that was going on, but she also described the moments of hope that allowed her to survive, and the people that were kind.
