, sponsored by State Representative Mack Butler , R-District 30, would prohibit schools “that participate in a federally funded or assisted meal program” from serving or selling ultra-processed foods, and defines those foods as containing one or more of 11 ingredients: Potassium Bromate, Propylparaben, Titanium Dioxide, Brominated Vegetable Oil, Yellow Dye 5, Yellow Dye 6, Blue Dye 1, Blue Dye 2, Blue Dye 3, Red Dye 3 , and Red Dye 40 .

If passed, The Alabama Healthy Schools Act would also prohibit third parties from selling foods with those listed ingredients on school campuses. It would not regulate lunches a student brings from home.California became the first state in the country to ban artificial food dyes from school lunches after a state report suggested a link between these petroleum derived dyes and behavioral issues in certain children.which bans some artificial dyes and preservatives in schools starting this fall then extends to foods sold statewide in 2028.If this bill is passed, it would take effect Oct. 1, 2025.
