Ted and Danny Williams were San Diego’s original latchkey kids
In this April 18, 1960 file photo, Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox hits a home run. In my remarks, I congratulated the developers for spending extra time and money to preserve and not demolish a local treasure.
Something unusual happened 100 years ago this month. John D. Spreckels, the richest man in San Diego, paid off the note. The industrialist, philanthropist, owner of the Hotel del Coronado and both the San Diego Union and San Diego Evening Tribune so greatly admired May Williams’ efforts to help the downtrodden that be bought the home for her as a gift.
He inherited his mother’s obsessive persona and concentrated his full attention on baseball, practically living at nearby University Heights playground. On another occasion, May believed the police had set a trap for poor and homeless people outside Salvation Army headquarters with the full cooperation of Major J.L. Kelso, head of the local Salvation Army. She protested and the former captain was demoted to the rank of private.
Although she could be a source of embarrassment to her eldest son, Ted loved his mother and inherited her concern for the poor and afflicted. In his outstanding biography, “Ted Williams,” Leigh Montville quoted Ted: “I always tried to live by the Golden Rule. Do unto others… I’ve always tried to live that.”
Baseball historian Bill Swank is the leading expert on early San Diego baseball, including the Lane Field Era . He has authored and co-authored six books on San Diego baseball. The Ancient and Honorable Order of E. Clampus Vitus is well-known for placing historical markers throughout the Western United States.
