Bill Lee, the 75-year-old former Red Sox star and current Savannah Bananas pitcher, is doing well in recovery after he collapsed with a 'cardiac episode' while warming up in the bullpen Friday night.
Lee was resuscitated by first responders and helped from the field at Grayson Stadium, then taken by ambulance to Memorial for further treatment.
On Saturday, Lee was visited by family as well as members of the Savannah Bananas organization. Team president Jared Orton said Saturday during the Bananas' rematch with the Party Animals that staff member Kurt KesslerByrnes and assistant coaches Michael Kowalski and Adam Virant also visited Lee. "More than anything, I think it was seeing his spirit and the pure joy on his face," Byrnes said."When I walked in the room, it brought a smile to my face. He's got a lot of life experience and a lot of love to give. It will continue. I'm grateful to know Bill Lee and he's a big part of my life."
Lee, a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, pitched from 1969-82 in the big leagues and was an All-Star for the Red Sox in 1973. He is regarded as one of the great characters in baseball history for his unfiltered views on the game, on politics, on virtually any subject.
