The longtime British actor and Golden Globes 'Best Actor' nominee opens up about the positive attention he is receiving right now from his new Sony Pictures Classics film and reveals what motivates his own daily life most today at 73.
’s overall theme centered around not wasting your life and actively striving to make your days matter right now, I wondered, beyond just the film’s entertainment value, what Nighy hopes audiences will take away most after watching“Well, I think obviously the procrastination thing,” continues Nighy.
Nighy and I went on to playfully discuss his recent 73rd birthday on December 12. Being fresh into a new year of life, I asked Nighy where he would say his priorities are today with acting and if that mindset is at all different from how he was even a decade or so ago. He quickly responds, “It is different. In the spirit of this film, I have tried to become more proactive. I am trying to find material that rather than sitting around, waiting for the phone to ring - you know, I’m an old hat. I’ve been around for a long time. Traditionally, what people of my generation, British actors of my generation, you wait for the phone to ring. You wait for somebody else to trigger the project, so I’m trying to be proactive and trigger things myself.
Being now seven decades deep into his many life experiences, Nighy is finally receiving the widespread recognition he deserves, as more and more moviegoers experience his artistic triumph in, while also continuing to celebrate his witty on-screen performances from yesteryear. As I began to wrap up our conversation and to add a human element to the end of our discussion about, I asked Nighy what he does in his own life today that brings him joy and makes him feel the most alive.
