Comedian Bill Maher on Friday slammed Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates for claiming standardized testing traces its roots back to white supremacy.a city radio station, where she touched on how testing is used to measure student achievement. This practice, she noted, appears racist given its historical usage.
Maher described decisions to do away with standardized testing as a “dumb” and slammed Gates over the comment. He also acknowledged the Chicago Teachers Union’s comment during the COVID-19 pandemic that attempts to return to in-person learning were “rooted in sexism, racism and misogyny.”And the idea that testing is rooted in white supremacy is in itself a racist belief that says Black children can’t compete with White children on tests, which they surely can," he added.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has also previously raised concerns over standardized testing. The mayor is currently facing criticism over actions relating to Chicago Public Schools, such as a spending proposal of his.
