The challenges of the season were myriad, from the pandemic shutdown that delayed production for months to convincing the famously niceto reveal just how much his character, Gene Cousineau, is loathed in Hollywood. “It’s not his character at all,” Hader says. “As a person, he is just very loving. There’s some scenes, especially later in the season, they’re really emotional and pretty brutal. Those were tough for him.

Actually quite a lot. The tent poles were all there. The bigger pieces of it kind of remained the same from our first writer's meeting, to be honest. I remember kind of going, "Well, maybe this season is this." And then that pretty much stayed the same. But actually what it was was writing season four, we decided like, "Well, let's write season four since we have all this time now.

Well, Barry, he's a bit at a loss. He's still trying to figure out what his purpose is. I think he still hasn't really recovered. It's been about six months where we saw everybody at the end of season two. And Barry and Sally are in very different places. Her career is in the best place it's ever been. And she has a lot of responsibility and kind of is doing what she's always wanted to be doing. And Barry, on the other hand, is on the couch playing video games.
