A new bill in Ohio could allow for indefinite expulsion of students who make threats toward their school or bring weapons to class.

Students who make threats toward their school or bring a weapon to class could face an indefinite expulsion under a bill heading to the governor’s desk. The bill requires districts to give superintendents the ability to expel a student for up to 180 days who pose “imminent and severe endangerment” to the health and safety of other students or school employees.

Bringing a gun or knife to a school or activity hosted by the districtMaking a written or verbal threat, “including a hit list, threatening manifesto, or social media post, that would lead a reasonable person to conclude that the student poses a serious threat.”\“Parents are entrusting schools to protect their children while they are away from the home,” Click said. “This legislation will help keep students safe by empowering school administrators to address situations where a student poses an imminent and severe threat to the safety of students, while also developing clear guardrails and conditions for the reinstatement of an expelled student. These situations can be complex, so this legislation allows school administrators to use their discretion to address the need that works best for their community.” After the 180-day period ends, a superintendent has the option to extend the expulsion by up to an additional 90 days. An assessment must first be performed on the student by a psychiatrist or licensed psychologist
