The University of North Carolina's offense was among the worst in the country last year.
Former Arkansas interim Head Coach Bobby Petrino calls a play against Missouri during the second half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025, in Fayetteville, Ark., UNC and Petrino are finalizing the deal, meaning Petrino will replace former New York Giants and Cleveland Browns assistant coach Freddie Kitchens, who was let go after the season.
Belichick, the former New England Patriots head coach, is hoping Petrino can help turn around the UNC offense that finished last season as one of the worst units statistically in the country, averaging 288.8 yards per game, ranking 131st out of 136 teams in total offense. The Tar Heels also finished 121st in scoring offense .Petrino has made headlines in the past not for his prolific offenses but for off-the-field transgressions. After a 3-10 start in his first season as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, he reportedly promised to remain in his position while the team was struggling, only to later resign and become the University of Arkansas head coach. In 2012, while he was head coach at the University of Arkansas, Petrino was having an affair with a woman in the school’s athletic department. The two were on a motorcycle together when it crashed on an Arkansas highway. Petrino initially said he was alone but later changed his story. He was then fired. Petrino returned to Arkansas in 2024, first as the school’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach but later became interim head coach after the school fired Sam Pittman following a 2-3 start to the season.
