Bill Battle , a former player and athletic director at the University of Alabama, has passed away at the age of 82. Battle played for the Crimson Tide from 1960 to 1962 under coach Paul 'Bear' Bryant and was part of Bryant's first national championship team in '61. After college, Battle served as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma under Bud Wilkinson and later as an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy.
He became the head coach at Tennessee in 1970 after being an assistant coach there for four years. Upon retiring as athletic director, he continued to serve at the University of Alabama as a special assistant to the university president. His legacy includes his roles in revolutionizing college athletics and his contributions to the Crimson Tide’s success, including the 2015 national championship
