The SBS commentator is looking to forward to this year’s epic race, which for the first time in 100 years isn’t finishing on the fabled Champs-Elysees.

The Tour de France will look a little different this year. For the first time since 1975, the men’s race will not culminate in a flash of Lycra down the Champs-Elysees, but with a time trial in Nice. But this is no reason to cry “quelle horreur!” about that change that was made to avoid a clash with the Paris Olympics, SBS commentator and Australian national time trial champion Dr Bridie O’Donnell assures us.

“People might have thought, ‘Oh no, it’s not on the Champs-Elysees! That’s the highlight!’” says O’Donnell. “But I think people are excited to have a final-stage time trial. On the Champs-Elysees, sprinters will vie for a stage victory. But the yellow jersey itself, people show respect for that. If the yellow jersey crashes on the Champs-Elysees, it would be a very brave contender to try and take the jersey in those circumstances. But a time trial is completely up for grabs.

“I had experiences where it was clear that team owners and directors objectified athletes, commented on their appearance, and frequently tried to have opportunities to violate the professional relationship,” says O’Donnell.She is a tireless advocate for women in sport, and in 2021 was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. “Now we are seeing changes in sport leadership positions – CEOS, board chairs, women who are making decisions about broadcasting, and about bidding for world cups.
