In a stunning discovery, the world’s largest coral has been found thriving in the Solomon Islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean.
A videographer on a National Geographic expedition discovered the coral in the remote Pacific Ocean.
Corals, often called the “rainforests of the sea,” are vital ecosystems. They provide homes for countless marine species and protect coastlines from erosion. Moreover, coral reefs support the livelihoods of one billion people through tourism and fishing. “We want the world to know that this is a special place and it needs to be protected,” Mr Trevor Manemahaga, climate minister for the Solomon Islands, toldWith over 490 varieties of hard and soft coral, the Solomon Islands’ oceans have the second-highest number of coral species globally.
