AN economist-lawmaker on Sunday expressed confidence that the Marcos administration’s planned expansion of “ayuda” or subsidy programs would hasten economic turnaround.

The 7.6 percent growth in gross domestic product in the third quarter of 2022 was the first full quarter of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration. The Department of Social Welfare and Development will get a big chunk of the budget, with P165.40 billion to be allocated for social assistance programs.

“This enables greater consumption and well-being, especially when targeted to the most vulnerable sectors. We see the relevance of providing immediate assistance to qualified Filipinos through programs such as the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations or AICS program of DSWD,” she noted.
