Ahmod Billins led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points, while Drashon Bussey followed with 18 and Xavier Harris added 12.

Jon Johnson HEADLAND – After a back-and-forth first quarter in which there were five lead changes and four ties between county rivals Headland and Abbeville, the game changed for good in the second quarter.

“Well, we noticed they were smart enough to find the cracks in our zone, so we had to go to a man-to-man defense and just put pressure and run up and down the court from pressing with man,” Abbeville coach Dexter Grimsley said. “We usually run a zone press, but that wasn’t going to work because they were finding those creases in the zone.

On Friday night, the Yellow Jackets started the second quarter hot from the outside themselves when Ahmod Billins hit two threes for the first points of the period. Billins led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points, while Drashon Bussey followed with 18 and Xavier Harris added 12.While Abbeville’s defense was perhaps the biggest story of the game, the way the Yellow Jackets controlled the backboards and scored inside the paint was also a big factor.

“The boards control everything we do. It controls us on offense and mostly on defense to be able to get out and run the fast break. We’ve got to be able to control the boards to have that done, so we stress that every day.”“Quick hands and quick feet – you’ve got to have both of them in order to make it work,” Grimsley said. “You can’t depend on the body … you have to have the hands and feet to get that ball when you’re trying to pressure the ball.
