'Auction angels' champion underdogs of the Houston Rodeo's student livestock show
Rodeo Auction Angels Dana Barton and Tony Bradfield, greet Ali Thayne, 12, one of the students who was about to have her steer auctioned during the Junior Market Steer Auction at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at NRG Stadium on Saturday, March 18, 2023 in Houston. The Rodeo Auction Angels were formed to bid on animals with the lowest bids.
That question became the reason why he and Dana Barton founded Rodeo Auction Angels. According to their website, the group's mission is to"champion the last lots in the rodeo livestock auctions that typically go unsold, ensuring no hardworking child is left alone on stage."Sometimes the bidding stretches over five hours. By then, the big spenders have cleared out and kids ranked lower on the list walk away empty-handed.
"Privilege provides access," said Bradfield, adding that the same rings true of the steer auction, too. He's served on the committee since 2020. She and Bradfield aren't worried about this year's Grand Champion, Stiles Patin from Milam County ISD, or the Reserve Grand Champion, Sterling Himes from Sterling County ISD. Himes was last year's Reserve Grand Champion as well; his award-winning steer set a record of $675,000.
Bobbie Nau, one of Rodeo Auction Angels' 18 founding members, put pressure on Bradfield and Barton to get the ball rolling.
