The Netflix-airing fight has a bit more weight after Monday's announcement.
When news broke that influencer-turned-boxing star Jake Paul would take on the former heavyweight superstar Mike Tyson in a boxing bout in July, many were perplexed.Paul had fought big name combat sports celebrities before, ranging from Tyron Woodley to Nate Diaz to Anderson Silva to Tommy Fury. But to sign a bout to fight the 57-year-old Mike Tyson felt a step too far.
“Mike Tyson and Jake Paul signed on to fight each other with the desire to do so in a sanctioned professional fight that would have a definitive outcome,” Most Valuable Promotions co-founder Nakisa Bidarian. “Over the past six weeks, MVP has worked with its partners to satisfy the requirements of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations to sanction Paul vs. Tyson, and we are grateful that we have gotten to this point.
Tyson hasn’t fought in an official professional bout since 2005, and has not won since a knockout against Clifford Etienne in 2003. He sports a career record of 50-6 with 44 KOs.
