'I have cried in many dressing rooms, and I don't wanna do that to anyone. I don't wanna make clothes that make anybody feel that way.'
style team is, well, into. This week, we highlightwho founded the brand Big Bud Press with inclusivity and sustainability in mind.
Lacey Micallef had many roles before she and her partner Philip Seastrom, a Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising graduate, startedin 2015. The preschool-teacher-turned-freelance artist-turned-business owner always had an interest in the fashion world, but it wasn’t until she joined forces with Philip, who was helming his own brand at the time, that she was able to take those interests and manifest them into the fiercely optimistic brand that Big Bud Press is today.
Lacey and Philip describe the brand as “non-trend driven,” meaning their clothes allow for the customer to “create their own beauty,” and that beauty is found through authenticity. They feature clothes, bags, and other accessories in an epic range of colors. And the options don’t stop there. Currently, you can shop Big Pud Press in sizes 3XS-5XL, and they have hopes to radically expand their already extensive size range.
On Instagram, they engage their audience with congeniality and are transparent when explaining things like their ethical buying methods, fair wages, and sustainability. They’re often asked, “Why does this cost so much?” While their clothes are marginally more expensive than a $5 top that you’d pick up at Forever 21, that's because they are focused on using locally sourced fabrics, paying their employees livable wages, and making everything in Los Angeles.
Not to toot our own horn, but I do feel that we’re responsible for what’s happening with jumpsuits at the moment. We came out with jumpsuits, like, two and a half years ago, and they’re just creeping up everywhere. And I feel that there’s been a new resurgence for color and things like that. I don’t know if we’re at the forefront of that, but we’re certainly contributing to the conversation.: Fashion has become very corporate and we’re not a corporate company.
