Big boost for the Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project after decades of planning.
This artist rendering from the Alabama Department of Transportation shows a vision for a proposed 215-foot cable-stayed bridge over the Mobile River. The first talks of the project began in 1997 when a feasibility study was conducted to determine whether or not this project would be beneficial to the coast.
Fast forward to 2010, there was a significant public involvement, leading to the draft environmental impact statement being signed in 2014. According to a 2019 public hearing survey conducted by U.S. Department of Transportation and ALDOT, 86% of people said they did not believe there is a need for this project, mainly because of a proposed toll.“I think it would really help,” said Jeb Rice. “Hopefully, at this point we have to do something.” “I think it is going to be awesome,” said Michelle Birch and her husband who travel to Mobile once a week from Daphne. “It is much needed.” This three-phase project has been keeping people on the edge of their seats, especially with congestion being a main concern.CEO of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce Bradley Byrne said this project has been talked about long enough. “I could remember as a new member of the legislature in 2002, working on this,” Byrne said. “So, decades in the making, but vitally, vitally needed not just for this area, but for the entire I-10 interstate system.”ALEA: Passenger in 1 car involved pileup jumps off bridge in panic as crash causes chaos on I-65Public housing chief lashes out at Mayor StimpsonBig federal grant in hand, here’s what’s next for the I-10 bridge project
