Jackie and Shadow, the famous bald eagles of Big Bear Lake, have begun their 2025 breeding season with the arrival of two eggs. Fans around the world are eagerly watching the nest-close camera to witness the next stages of their journey, including the anticipated 'talon-offs' and the potential for a third egg.
Big Bear Lake was abuzz with excitement during the afternoon of January 25th, as something a bit special was swirling in the wind. While the weather forecast predicted light snow, the real spectacle was unfolding in the eagle's nest. Jackie , the beloved female bald eagle, had been laying her eggs around the same time each year, but this year, there was a slight twist. Egg #1 arrived a few minutes after 5 p.m. on January 22nd, while egg #2 made its debut at 4:45 p.m.
on January 25th, a full 20 minutes earlier than usual. Jackie and her longtime mate, Shadow, operate on their own schedule, much to the delight (and sometimes frustration) of their global fan base who follow their every move through a nest-close camera run by the nonprofit organization, Friends of Big Bear Valley. Although Jackie didn't experience a full blanket of snow like in previous years, she settled down comfortably and protected her eggs under a substantial amount of snowfall. An eagle's feathery 'armor' provides excellent insulation against the winter's chill, keeping both the bird and its eggs warm and cozy. Both Jackie and Shadow diligently participate in incubating the eggs, and they take turns, or as eagle enthusiasts affectionately call it, 'talon-offs.' Watching these hand-offs, where Jackie and Shadow end and start their egg-guarding shifts, is a highlight for many fans. Their graceful maneuvering around the nest, coupled with their seeming reluctance to relinquish their duties and their animated 'conversations,' create moments that are both endearing and comical. Will a third egg arrive around January 28th? It's a question that many fans are eagerly pondering, especially since Jackie's 2024 clutch consisted of three eggs, which unfortunately turned out to be nonviable. Those hoping to witness the arrival of a possible third egg should tune in to the nest camera around mid-afternoon on January 28th. Jackie typically lays her eggs about three days apart, but Friends of Big Bear Valley have noted that a second or third egg can arrive anywhere from three to five days after the first or second egg
