MONTOURSVILLE -- An Illinois contractor has submitted the apparent low bid of $106.4 million for nine bridges and four noise walls along the southern section of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway in Snyder County. The bid by Walsh Construction Co. of Chicago was one of three received Thursday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Construction of the bridges and noise walls is expected to begin early next year. PennDOT would not say if the low bid was higher or lower than its estimate, just that it was happy it was near to it.Input from the public was a factor in the decision of whether noise barriers would be needed and at what location. Four will be built as part of the contract for which bids were just opened.Earthmoving on the six-mile southern section has been underway for a year under a $115.2 millionThat contract, which includes moving approximately five million cubic yards of earth along with the construction of two roundabouts, a bridge carrying Sunbury Road over the thruway, and several box culverts, is 35 percent complete, PennDOT says. The thruway’s southern section will connect the north end of the Route 11/15 Selinsgrove bypass with a Route 15 intersection south of Winfield, built as part of the northern section. The project includes a Route 61 connector to provide direct access to Sunbury over the Veterans Memorial Bridge across the Susquehanna River.was opened in July 2022. When all construction is completed in 2027, there will be a four-lane limited access highway between Selinsgrove and Williamsport that will ease congestion, improve safety and accommodate growth in the region, said Eric High, PennDOT district executive in Montoursville. It will take through traffic off the highly commercialized section of Route 11/15 in Shamokin Dam and Hummels Wharf.
