The president and first lady are expected to meet first responders, family members and survivors of a rampage that killed 18.

Community members hold a vigil for the victims of the recent mass shooting in Maine, which killed 18 people.

Authorities in Maine have indicated that the alleged gunman, Robert Card, 40, used an AR-style rifle during the Oct. 25 shootings, which took place at a bowling alley and a bar in the town of about 40,000. While the shooter’s motives are unknown — Card wasof a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound last Friday — law enforcement officials have said he had mental health issues and access to an arsenal of guns.

“The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why I now call on the United States Congress to ban assault rifles, like the one used by the sick perpetrator of this mass killing in my hometown of Lewiston, Maine,” Golden said.
