President Biden is expected to nominate Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Brown would be the second black general to become the Pentagon’s top leader.

WASHINGTON—President Biden is expected to nominate Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, succeeding Army Gen. Mark Milley and installing the second Black general in the post, according to U.S. officials.

Gen. Brown is currently the chief of staff of the Air Force. Once nominated and if confirmed by the Senate, two Black men would lead the Pentagon for the first time ever. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is the first Black defense secretary.
