President Biden will return to the White House this afternoon to address the nation about the crisis in Afghanistan, an official tells CNN

Biden remained at the wooded Camp David presidential retreat with members of his family over the weekend as chaotic images from Kabul emerged. He will return to Washington ahead of his address, which is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. ET. It will be his first time in six days speaking in public on the matter, which has become the most serious test of Biden's foreign policy since he took office.

Biden himself has pressed his national security team to explain how intelligence assessments -- which as recently as last month said it could take weeks or months for Kabul to fall after the last US troops withdrew -- were so off, according to people familiar with the matter. At the same time, he has not second-guessed his decision to withdraw.
