WASHINGTON—President Biden spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday about the growing plague of ransomware attacks on U.S. critical infrastructure and businesses, marking the second time in less than a month that the president has raised a top national security concern with his Russian counterpart.
The White House said the president stressed the need for Russia to disrupt ransomware groups operating there and said the U.S. would take “any necessary action to defend its people and its critical infrastructure.” The White House didn’t specify what those actions could include. The White House statement said Mr. Biden “emphasized that he is committed to continued engagement on the broader threat posed by ransomware.”
