President Biden spoke with the families of Ryan Corbett, George Glezmann, and Mahmood Habibi on Sunday, assuring them that he would not trade Guantanamo Bay detainee Muhammad Rahim for their release unless the Taliban confirms Habibi's whereabouts. The Taliban has denied holding Habibi, complicating negotiations.
Habibi, an Afghan American businessman, went missing in 2022, along with 29 other employees of the telecommunications company he worked for. While most have been released, Habibi and one other person remain unaccounted for. Corbett, a civilian contractor, was abducted by the Taliban in August 2022, and Glezmann, an airline mechanic, was taken by the Taliban's intelligence services in December 2022. Families of the detainees expressed gratitude for Biden's call but urged him to finalize a deal. They emphasized the urgency of the situation, with the possibility of a deal expiring before the end of his term. If no agreement is reached, the responsibility will fall to the incoming Trump administration to negotiate with the Taliban
