President Biden delivered his final foreign policy speech, emphasizing a potential breakthrough in negotiations to end the Israel-Hamas conflict and bring home American hostages. The speech also highlighted his administration's successes in bolstering global alliances and supporting Ukraine.

President Joe Biden delivered his final foreign policy speech at the State Department on Monday, January 13, 2025, highlighting his administration's efforts to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and bring home American hostages held captive in Gaza. Biden expressed optimism about the possibility of a breakthrough in the ongoing negotiations, stating, 'And so, we're working urgently to close this deal.

' He emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that he had spoken with key international players, including the leader of Qatar and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in recent days to advance the peace process. Biden stressed the importance of a peaceful resolution for all parties involved, stating, 'The Palestinian people deserve peace and the right to determine their own futures. Israel deserves peace and real security. And the hostages and their families deserve to be reunited.'The White House signaled a deal could be finalized before Biden leaves office, with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stating, 'We are close to a deal, and it can get done this week.' While caution remained, administration officials predicted the next 24 hours would be critical for the negotiations. The proposed agreement reportedly involves a ceasefire lasting at least six weeks in exchange for the release of around 30 hostages held by Hamas, including at least two American citizens. In addition, Israel is expected to release over a thousand Palestinian prisoners and detainees.Beyond the hostage situation, Biden highlighted his administration's efforts on the global stage, particularly in supporting Ukraine against Russia's invasion. He emphasized the unity of the international community, noting that 23 NATO countries are now spending 2% of their GDP on defense, a significant increase from nine when he took office. Biden asserted that Russia's invasion of Ukraine had backfired, stating, 'Putin never has. Think about it. We help Ukrainians stop Putin. And now, nearly three years later, Putin has failed to achieve any of his strategic objectives.
