“We’re not going to shut down and we have to open our schools,” President Trump said during Debates2020, while Joe Biden said he would not rule out future shutdowns due to the pandemic
Former Vice President Joe Biden said he would not rule out more shutdowns, while the president vowed to continue to keep the economy open.
“All he does is talk about shutdowns,” Mr. Trump said. “We’re not going to shutdown and we have to open our schools.”Mr. Biden responded that America “ought to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time we ought to be able to safely open but they need resources to open.” He called for plexiglass dividers, testing and contact tracing to help schools and businesses reopen.
The president said New York had become a ghost town and restaurants and businesses were shutting down.Mr. Trump reiterated the need for cities and states to reopen to restore economic activity, arguing the costs of putting in plexiglass or other protective measures may be too burdensome for some firms.
Mr. Biden countered that New York had taken aggressive steps to bring the virus under control after a significant outbreak earlier this year. The economies of southern states have generally outperformed the rest of the country, seeing lower jobless rates and higher consumer spending thanks in part to a faster rollback of Covid-19 restrictions.
