President Joe Biden will visit Florida this Saturday, a few days after the state was hit by Hurricane Idalia.
The Category 3 hurricane struck on Wednesday, with the storm causing damage across the state, including at Gov. Ron DeSantis's mansion. As of Wednesday evening, the storm was downgraded to a tropical depression.
“I am going to Florida Saturday morning,” Biden said during a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C. Biden's visit to Florida comes as he has plans to spend Labor Day weekend at his home near Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. The president, along with First Lady Jill Biden, will travel to their home on Friday and stay for the weekend, according to the White House's"Week Ahead Guidance. It is not yet known how the president's trip to Florida will interfere with his weekend vacation plans.The visit to Florida comes shortly after Biden visited Maui, Hawaii, last week, where wildfires greatly affected local residents. Biden was vacationing in Delaware when the fires first broke out in early August; he waited two weeks before stepping foot on Maui. The president defended his response to the wildfires. In February, East Palestine, Ohio, was affected by a train derailment that left many locals concerned about their water supply being contaminated. While Biden said in March that he would visit East Palestine"at some point," he still has yet to visit.
