Bernie Sanders emphasized that an economic -- and humanitarian -- response to the coronavirus should be broad, focusing on how to help elderly people get food, helping schoolchildren avoid trauma and assisting homeless people.

That was an apparent reference to the recent announcement by the Fed, which operates independently from the president, that it would make up to $1.5 trillion in short-term loans to support credit markets and assure liquidity. These are loans that are short term, fully collateralized, and paid back with interest.

“We’re in a situation where we have to now be providing for the hospitals that are going to be needed now, the present system can’t handle the surge that is likely to come,” Mr. Biden said. Mr. Sanders said this pandemic exposes the “incredible weakness and dysfunctionality” of the U.S. health system. He supports Medicare for All, which would replace the current system with a federal health program covering everyone, while largely ending private insurance. He outlined ways to pay for it that include a progressive tax
