President Joe Biden praised former Vice President Walter Mondale at his memorial service on Sunday in Minnesota.
Mondale, 93, died of natural causes on April 19, 2021. Biden was joined by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Sens. Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar, University of Minnesota President Joan T. A. Gabel, and the former vice president's sons Ted and William.
"There are two ways of spreading light, to be a candle or the mirror that reflects it.'" Biden said during the speech, quoting the novelist Edith Wharton before referring to the former vice president by his common nickname."Fritz was both the candle and the mirror. The candle spreading light and the mirror reflecting it." Biden previously described Mondale as “one of our nation’s most dedicated patriots and public servants.
“There have been few senators, before or since, who commanded such universal respect ... It was Walter Mondale who defined the vice presidency as a full partnership, and helped provide a model for my service," Biden said in a tribute at the time of his Mondale's death.Biden made an appearance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday, where he spoke before the crowd, making a dig at his own approval ratings before criticizing Trump.
President Biden offered"a special thanks to the 42% of you who actually applauded" as he started his speech, making light of his struggling poll numbers. Taking a jab at the media, he then added,"I'm really excited to be here tonight with the only group of Americans with a lower approval rating than I have."
