Joe Biden certainly is not the first president to issue a pardon purely for personal reasons.

President Joe Biden greets his son Hunter Biden at Delaware Air National Guard Base in New Castle, Delaware, Tuesday, June 11, 2024.Last Sunday evening, President Joe Biden did something he’d said on many occasions he would not do -- pardon his son Hunter Biden, who faced sentencing later this month forto which Hunter himself pleaded guilty

. The phrasing of the pardon goes further, immunizing Hunter against infractions he might have committed from Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 1, 2024, so the incoming Donald Trump administration can’t charge him for crimes during that period.and that, as recently as Nov. 7, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the answer was still “no” when asked if a pardon might be coming before Hunter’s sentencing.

Biden certainly is not the first president to issue a pardon purely for personal reasons. Donald Trump did so repeatedly in his first term regarding friends and associates, including his daughter Ivanka’s father-in-law, Charles Kushner, whom he has now named his ambassador to France — and can be expected to issue more pardons in his second term. But it potentially emboldens presidents to widen the practice.

Joe Biden critics: “Pardoning Hunter undermines trust in government, erodes public faith in justice and reeks of favoritism. It’s the ultimate abuse of presidential power to shield the well-connected from accountability. One cannot imagine a worse way to dishonor the highest office in the land.”I understand parental love. I would do whatever I could, without reservation, to help any of my daughters out of a jam. Joe Biden’s decision is not without cost, however.
