President Biden issued a series of preemptive pardons on his last day in office, protecting individuals targeted by threats from then-President-elect Donald Trump. The pardons included high-profile figures like Mark Milley, Dr. Anthony Fauci, members of the January 6th committee, and D.C. police officers who testified before the committee.

President Joe Biden, in his final hours in office, issued a series of pardons on Monday morning, aiming to shield individuals from potential criminal prosecutions that President-elect Donald Trump had threatened. Biden's pardons encompassed a range of prominent figures, including former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley, Dr. Anthony Fauci, members and staff of the House Select Committee that investigated the January 6 , 2021, attack on the Capitol, and D.C.

Metropolitan police officers who provided testimony to that committee. The committee members included Senator Adam Schiff of California, then a House representative; former Representatives Liz Cheney of Wyoming, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Elaine Luria of Virginia, and Stephanie Murphy of Florida; and current Representatives Pete Aguilar of California, Zoe Lofgren of California, Jamie Raskin of Maryland, and Bennie Thompson of Mississippi. The police officers who testified before the committee were Harry Dunn, Aquilino Gonell, Michael Fanone, and Daniel Hodges. Biden, in a statement, asserted that some of those pardoned were facing threats of criminal prosecutions and that he could not remain inactive in the face of such injustice. He emphasized that these public servants had served the nation with distinction and did not deserve to be subjected to unfounded and politically motivated legal actions. Biden lauded Milley's over 40 years of service to the U.S., guiding the Armed Forces through global security challenges and strengthening alliances. He praised Fauci's contributions to public health, including managing responses to HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and Zika, and his crucial role in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden vehemently defended the Jan. 6 committee members, denouncing those who had attacked and threatened them, although he did not explicitly name Trump. He called for investigations and potential jail time for those responsible for the January 6th attack. Biden argued that those who perpetrated the attack had undermined and intimidated the committee members in an attempt to rewrite history, minimize the significance of January 6th for partisan gain, and seek revenge through threats of criminal prosecution. He stressed that baseless and politically motivated investigations inflict severe damage on the lives, safety, and financial security of individuals targeted. Even when individuals are innocent and ultimately exonerated, the mere threat of investigation or prosecution can irreparably harm their reputations and finances. Biden stated that the pardons should not be misconstrued as an acknowledgment of wrongdoing by these individuals.
