Garcetti’s nomination has been rumored for weeks, but the announcement on Friday makes it official. If he is confirmed by the Senate, the Los Angeles City Council could either appoint someone as mayor through the remainder of Garcetti’s term or it could call a special election to fill the role through the end of the term.
Biden announced Garcetti alongside three other ambassador nominees, including Denise Campbell Bauer, who previously worked as a television journalist and was ambassador to Belgium during President Barack Obama’s administration. Bauer is nominated to be the U.S. ambassador to France.
