President Biden celebrated the Affordable Care Act’s 13th anniversary by lauding the expansion of health insurance coverage to tens of millions more Americans — and decrying conservative Republicans’ budget ideas as a threat to families and the elderly.
Biden acknowledged the government has not yet moved far enough to make health care affordable, but he said the sprawling health-care law, which congressional Republicans unsuccessfully sought to dismantle dozens of times during more than a decade, “has developed deep roots in this country” and become “a critical part of providing health care and saving lives.”
Commemorating the date President Barack Obama signed the sprawling health-care legislation into law has become a springtime ritual for Democrats in Washington, providing the party a handy moment to restate its commitment to broadening access to health insurance and making medical services more affordable.
When he spoke Thursday in the East Room, Biden did not announce an immediate expansion of the law. Instead, as the 2024 election approaches and the president has all but announced he will pursue a second term, Biden used the occasion to reaffirm his loyalty to the law, take credit for more recent steps he has shepherded to curb health-care costs and reprise his derision of Republican budget proposals.
