President Biden released a slate of nominees to serve as U.S. ambassadors, choosing former deputy national security adviser Julianne Smith as his ambassador to NATO and C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger III for a post with an international aviation group

WASHINGTON—President Biden released a slate of nominees Tuesday to serve as U.S. ambassadors, choosing veteran diplomat and Wall Street executive Thomas Nides as his representative to Israel and former Interior Secretary and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar as ambassador to Mexico.

The White House said Mr. Biden intended to nominate Julianne Smith, a deputy national security adviser when Mr. Biden served as vice president, to be ambassador to NATO. Cynthia Ann Telles is Mr. Biden’s choice to be ambassador to Costa Rica, the White House said. Dr. Telles is a professor of psychiatry at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.

The president also picked C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger III, the pilot who safely landed a damaged passenger jet on the Hudson River in 2009, saving all 155 aboard, to serve on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization, carrying a rank of ambassador. The White House announced the nominations as Mr. Biden neared the end of his first overseas trip as president, with stops in the U.K. for the Group of Seven summit and Belgium for meetings with NATO and European Union nations.
