President Biden's political career concludes as President-elect Trump takes office. Despite legislative achievements, Biden faces a legacy tarnished by his inability to prevent Trump's return and struggles with approval ratings.

President Biden 's half-century political career culminates on Monday as President-elect Trump takes office, succeeding Biden in the White House. Despite his accomplishments during his four years in office, including legislative victories and other notable achievements, Biden leaves office with one of the lowest approval ratings in the nation's history.

Promising to turn the page from his predecessor's presidency in his 2020 campaign, Biden faces a legacy tarnished by his inability to prevent Trump's return to power. In an open letter to the American people on Wednesday, Biden acknowledged his failure to fulfill this central campaign promise. 'I ran for president because I believed that the soul of America was at stake. The very nature of who we are was at stake,' Biden wrote. However, he lamented that 'that’s still the case.' Political scientist Wayne Lesperance, the president of New England College, commented, 'President Biden ran on and was elected on a platform of a return to normalcy in 2020. And while voters appear to have wanted that in principle, history will remember Biden as having been unable to deliver on his promise.'During his farewell address to the nation this past week, Biden attempted to solidify his legacy as a president who aimed to stabilize domestic politics, strengthen America's global leadership, and guide the nation out of the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted his administration's accomplishments, including historic investments in infrastructure and clean energy, economic growth, job creation, and lower prescription drug prices. However, he also issued a warning about the rise of an 'oligarchy' in America, characterized by extreme wealth, power, and influence, which he believes threatens American democracy and basic rights. Biden concludes his single term with approval ratings remaining significantly low. The latest Fox News national poll, conducted January 10-13 and released on Thursday, showed Biden with a 42% approval rating and a 57% disapproval rating. CNN's latest poll, mirroring Biden's previous low point during his presidency, revealed a 36% approval rating. USA Today/Suffolk University and Marist College polls from early and mid-January also indicated Biden's approval rating hovering around 43%, remaining in negative territory.Biden's approval rating had initially hovered in the low to mid-50s during his first six months in office. However, it began to decline in August 2021 following widespread criticism of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and a surge in COVID-19 cases, primarily among unvaccinated individuals. The decline was further fueled by soaring inflation, which began in the summer of 2021 and continues to be a major concern for Americans, and the increasing number of migrants attempting to cross the U.S. southern border. Biden's approval ratings dipped below 50% in the autumn of 2021 and never recovered. Recent polls indicate that many Americans view Biden's presidency as a failure. CNN's survey revealed that 61% of adults nationwide consider Biden's presidency an overall failure, while 38% view it as a success. The USA Today/Suffolk University poll reported that 44% of registered voters believe history will judge Biden as a failed president, with 27% seeing him as a fair president. 21% anticipate history will perceive Biden as a good president, while only 5% predict he will be seen as great. The Marist poll showed slightly over a third of adults nationwide believing Biden will be remembered as one of the worst presidents in American history, with 19% considering him below average. 28% believe his legacy will be viewed as average, while 19% anticipate he will be regarded as above average or one of the best presidents in the nation's history. In a final interview before leaving office, Biden admitted to MSNBC, 'ironically, I almost spent too much time on the policy, not enough time on the politics.' The ill-fated re-election campaign further complicates his legacy
