Democrats are still trying to figure out what went wrong for them at the ballot box that gave Trump a swing state sweep and a governing trifecta.

Democrats are still trying to figure out what went wrong for them at the ballot box that gave President-elect Donald Trump aand led to Democratic losses in the Senate that cost the party its narrow majority.

While each of the seven battlegrounds were close and Trump’s margins in the popular vote have shrunk since Election Day, he is preparing to take back the White House with renewed political momentum andThe party has been on aafter Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss, which came after perhaps the most unpredictable and shocking years in recent political history. Harris was whipped into the race with only a few months to go before Election Day and there were two attempts on Trump’s life, which came as votersdespite a healthy economy and broad discontent with Democrats’ stewardship of the problems. Biden has shouldered some of the blame as Democrats reflect on what went wrong for how long he resisted dropping his reelection bid despite concerns about his age and mental acuity moving forward that were present before election year hit. Biden’s decision to drop out came with just over 100 days to go until Election Day, well after states had gone through their primary process and with a small window for Harris to map out a vision for the country’s future. Some have argued that giving her more time or having the party go through a traditional primary process could have helped the ticket perform better against Trump. Limited polling conducted since Election Day has also found that Democratic voters are more likely to blame Biden than Harris for her loss. An Economist/YouGov poll found Harris supporters were four times as likely to blame Biden than Harris for her loss despite the fact that he wasn’t on the ballot. The most common answer was that “it was just a bad year for Democrats” at 53%. “There really is only one direction that you, if you're a Democrat, are going to point in, and that's at the guy who drove down enthusiasm and excitement, the guy who drove down trust from the public, because everybody kept around him, kept saying, ‘Oh, he's sharp as a tack’ and then everybody got to see that he was not,” said Alison Dagnes, a political science professor at Shippensburg University. While Trump’s margins are smaller than it initially appeared after being declared the winner overnight of Election Day, he made significant in-roads with several blocs of voters that have traditionally backed Democratic candidates. He alsolike New York and New Jersey, won more support from working-class Americans and expanded gains with Latino voters. Pew Research Center polling released on Friday showed that 50% of Americans said the Republican Party represents the interests of people like them at least “somewhat well,” the highest it has ever been since Trump took over the political spotlight in 2016. Only 43% of people said that about Democrats, the first time in eight years the party has trailed on the question. California Sen.-elect Adam Schiff said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that Biden’s decision to drop out of the race gave Harris a chance but the entire party bears responsibility for its losses. “The challenge we have is we need to put forward a bold vision of how we’re going to move the economy forward, make the economy work for every American. To me, the existential question is if you, working hard in America, can you still earn a good living? And too many people doubt that that's possible,” Schiff said. Winning back voters that have shifted to Trump and other Republicans is one of the primary challenges facing Democrats moving forward but there is also a major unknown in what the political landscape will look like with the president-elect unable to run for office anymore. After spending nearly a decade campaigning against him and tying down-ballot candidates to him, Democrats will also have to find a new message in the coming years. A major pillar of Democratic politics over the last several cycles has been keeping Trump and like-minded candidates out of positions of power, which is showing diminishing results based on this year’s outcome. “It’s evident the American public just doesn't buy it anymore. So, what are you going to do? And the answer is you’ve got to come up with some policy preferences that the public is going to buy,” Dagnes said.
