As the leader of a nation plagued by daily shootings, Biden said he had promised the state's Democratic governor the 'deployment of all necessary federal law enforcement'.

WASHINGTON - US President Joe Biden called on Congress Tuesday to act against America's epidemic of gun violence, one day after a new massacre on a Michigan university campus killed three people and injured five.

At an emotional press conference in Lansing, the capital of the north-central state, police said the 43-year-old suspect, Anthony McRay, had no affiliation with the school and had been found dead around midnight on Monday. "I have taken action to combat this epidemic in America, including a historic number of executive actions and the first significant gun safety law in nearly 30 years, but we must do more," he said.

After shots rang out in a campus building where two students were killed early Monday evening, thousands of students were ordered to shelter in place. Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman of the university's police said Tuesday at a press conference that authorities still have "absolutely no idea what the motive was."Gun violence is alarmingly common in the United States, a country where there are more guns than people and where attempts to clamp down on their spread are always met with stiff resistance.

"I am filled with rage that we have to have another press conference to talk about our children being killed in their schools," said Slotkin, calling for action on gun violence.
