President Joe Biden delivers his farewell address as he prepares to hand over power to President-elect Donald Trump. Biden reflects on his tumultuous presidency, highlighting achievements and challenges, while emphasizing the enduring strength of American democracy.
President Joe Biden will deliver his final Oval Office address on Wednesday, marking the end of his term and his decades-long career in politics. Biden's farewell speech will air in prime time, beginning at 8 p.m. ET. This address comes just five days before President-elect Donald Trump 's inauguration. Biden will attend the inauguration, continuing the tradition of a peaceful transfer of power that Trump himself disrupted in 2021.
\In a letter released Wednesday morning, Biden reflected on his presidency, which began in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic and the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob. 'I ran for president because I believed that the soul of America was at stake. The very nature of who we are was at stake. And that's still the case,' Biden stated, emphasizing the core values he fought to protect during his time in office. On Monday, speaking at the State Department, Biden asserted that the U.S. was in a stronger position globally and with key allies than during Trump's first term. 'A new challenge will certainly emerge in the months and years ahead,' Biden acknowledged. 'But even so, it's clear my administration is leaving the next administration with a very strong hand to play, and we're leaving them and America with more friends and stronger alliances whose adversaries are weaker and under pressure.' \Biden highlighted his administration's support for Ukraine against Russia's invasion and efforts to curb Iran's influence. He also defended his decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, although the chaotic nature of the withdrawal tarnished his presidency. Last Friday, following the release of another positive jobs report, Biden expressed confidence that he was leaving behind a 'stronger than ever' economy. He also emphasized his signature legislative achievements: the American Rescue Plan, providing stimulus checks and aid to small businesses; the Inflation Reduction Act, addressing climate change, healthcare, and taxes; and the CHIPS Act, investing in domestic computer chip manufacturing. However, record-high inflation earlier in his term, coupled with high interest rates, fueled economic discontent that impacted his own re-election bid and Vice President Kamala Harris's subsequent campaign against Trump in 2024. 'I think I would have beaten Trump, could have beaten Trump, and I think that Kamala could have beaten Trump,' Biden stated, adding that his decision to step aside was aimed at unifying the Democratic Party.
