President Biden has commuted the death sentences of 37 federal inmates to life without the possibility of parole. This action aligns with the moratorium on federal executions implemented by the Biden administration, excluding cases of terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder. Biden, citing his conscience and experience, expressed his belief that the death penalty should be abolished at the federal level.

The sentences of 37 of the 40 federal inmates on death row will be reclassified to life without the possibility of parole, the White House said."These commutations are consistent with the moratorium my Administration has imposed on federal executions, in cases other than terrorism and hate-motivated mass murder," Biden said in a statement.

Beyond federal death sentences, about half of states allow the death penalty. More than two dozen people have been executed this year, according to the One of the inmates whose sentences Biden will commute, Billie Allen, has maintained his innocence.
