President Joe Biden on Friday fired Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul after he refused a request to resign, a White House official told NBC News. Saul, who was appointed to lead the agency by President Donald Trump, was notified that his employment was terminated immediately, according to the official.
Team Biden apparently requested that Saul and David Black, the agency's deputy commissioner, resign. Black agreed and stepped down, but Saul balked, which led to his firing. For many Democrats and their allies, Saul won't be missed.
Saul was a curious choice to lead the agency in the first place: Trump's 2019 nominee was a prominent Republican donor whoat a conservative think tank that has called for cuts to Social Security benefits. But what makes this development especially unusual is that there was some question as to whether the president had the legal authority to oust the head of the Social Security Administration, which is a semi-independent agency, and whose commissioner has not traditionally been seen as a politically appointed position.
