Joe Biden clarified that he had not been arrested during a 1970s-era congressional delegation trip to South Africa, as he had said at campaign events earlier this month
Joe Biden clarified Friday that he had not been arrested during a 1970s-era congressional delegation trip to South Africa, as he had claimed recently.
But Mr. Biden said in a Friday interview on CNN’s “New Day,” that he had been prevented from proceeding to the same airport screening area as the members of the Congressional Black Caucus who he had been traveling with during the South Africa trip to voice opposition to apartheid. Mr. Biden’s retelling of his trip had been questioned after he told recent campaign audiences that he “got arrested trying to see” Mr. Mandela, who later served as South African’s president from 1994 to 1999.
