Joe Biden’s campaign has canceled events planned for Friday in Chicago, including two high-profile fundraisers and a public rally, in the wake of growing fears about the coronavirus outbreak
CHICAGO — Joe Biden’s presidential campaign has canceled events planned for here on Friday, including two high-profile fundraisers and a public rally, in the wake of growing fears about the coronavirus outbreak and just days before Illinois’ March 17 primary.
“The health and safety of the public is our number one priority,” Biden’s campaign said in a statement. “We have been and will continue to consult with relevant officials, including our recently announced Public Health Advisory Committee, regarding steps the campaign should take to minimize health risks for staff and supporters.
On Thursday, the former vice president will deliver remarks on the coronavirus pandemic, and Friday’s and Monday’s events will become virtual events. Details are pending on what that will mean. Biden was to have attended back-to-back fundraisers on Friday — a breakfast and an early-afternoon reception — with high-profile donors on the guest lists in Chicago. Former supporters of Pete Buttigieg’s campaign and bundlers for Hillary Clinton’s and Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns were on the host lists. Former Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker was also on both invites.
In an email to guests that was provided to POLITICO, organizers said: “In response to COVID-19, the Vice President and his team will be decamping in Philadelphia at headquarters until further notice.”. The organization previously resisted the classification.

Biden Extends Olive Branch To Biden SupportersPHILADELPHIA—In a largely measured speech calling for party unity after a string of primary victories, former Vice President Joe Biden took to the stage Tuesday night to extend an olive branch to Biden supporters. “I appreciate the enthusiasm and energy of Joe Biden’s voters, and I want any of his supporters who feel lost or counted out to know that there is a place for them with my campaign,” said Biden, stressing that while he and the vice president did not see eye to eye on every issue, they both shared values that represented a bold new vision for the American people. “Of course, I might have occasionally clashed with Joe Biden in the more strained moments of recent debates, but we also worked together for many years in the Senate. At the end of the day, whether you’re a Biden supporter or a Biden supporter, we have the same goal, which is to get Trump out of the White House and replace him with Joe Biden.” At press time, pundits launched into fevered speculations that the candidate’s speech could contain hints Joe Biden was mulling the choice to appoint Joe Biden as vice president.
