ABC News’ George Stephanopolous pressed the president about why he wasn’t prepared enough to debate Donald Trump.
In early clips provided by ABC News of his first full-length interview since last week’s debate, Biden took full responsibility for his performance and said he prepared with “explicit detail,” as he would for meetings with foreign leaders or the National Security Council. In a rambling answer that also included an unrelated reference to polling from The New York Times, he also seemed to acknowledge that Trump’s alleged falsehoods stymied him.“I couldn’t, I mean, the way the debate ran,” Biden said. “My fault, nobody else’s fault, no one else’s fault.”
Biden needs a compelling performance in the unscripted interview to prove to increasingly skeptical Democrats has the mental fortitude to run for the presidency, let alone complete a second term in the job.
