President Joe Biden awarded Pope Francis the Presidential Medal of Freedom with distinction, a rare honor marking the first time Biden has bestowed the award with such distinction during his presidency. Biden highlighted the Pope's work in alleviating suffering for vulnerable communities and his contributions to addressing the humanitarian crises in Ukraine and Gaza.
The award comes after Biden was forced to cancel a trip to the Vatican this weekend to monitor the devastating wildfires in California.with distinction, the first time in his term the president has bestowed that honor, the White House announced on Saturday.
“The first pope from the Southern Hemisphere, Pope Francis is unlike any who came before,” the White House wrote in a statement. “Above all, he is the People’s Pope — a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world.”The two also “discussed efforts to advance peace around the world, including Pope Francis’ work to alleviate suffering for vulnerable communities,” the White House said.
